The Supreme Court on Thursday ordered the federal government to enforce stringent laws pertaining to the removal of blasphemous content from social media. Justice Qazi Muhammad Amin was hearing the bail plea of Shaukat Ali, accused of writing blasphemous content about the companions of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). He re
iterated that the authorities
must take strict action against blasphemous content on social media.
The apex court expressed satisfaction over the government’s report on the removal of blasphemous content. “I am happy that blasphemous content has been removed from social media,” Justice Qazi said.
The cou
nsel stated that the accused has committed indirect contempt of court. The cou
nsel stated the accused has been in jail for a year-and-a-h
alf, adding that the challan has been submitted and there are only five witnesses. Justice Qazi Muhammad said the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) termed the statement of the accused ‘insulting’ and suggested that the accused
withdraws his bail application and faces trial. The accused
withdrew his bail application.
